What is an ICL?
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens or Implantable Contact Lens) is a lens that is placed inside the eye to correct refractive errors. It can correct vision power from +10D to -25D and cylinder power up to 8D. For placing an ICL, there is no need to remove the natural crystalline lens of the eye.
What is ICL made of?
The ICL is made of Collamer®, a highly biocompatible advanced lens material that contains a small amount of purified collagen. Collamer does not cause any reaction inside the eye and it also contains an ultraviolet filter that provides protection to the eye.
Where is ICL placed in the eye?
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens or Implantable Contact Lens) is placed inside the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural eye lens.
A trained ophthalmologist inserts the ICL through a small micro-incision. The lens is designed to stay safely inside the eye without touching any internal eye structures and does not require any special care after placement.
Am I fit for ICL?
Every patient is different and every eye is different. Therefore, every patient requires a complete ICL evaluation before surgery.
The ICL evaluation includes:
- Patient’s vision assessment
- Pentacam corneal scan
- AC Depth measurement to check space for ICL placement
- Corneal size measurement with caliper
- Retina examination
If your evaluation is normal, your age is above 18 years, your eye power is stable for the last 6 months, your retina is healthy and there is no eye disease, you may be suitable for ICL.
Most patients who are not suitable for LASIK due to thin cornea or high eye power may be suitable candidates for ICL.
What are the benefits of ICL?
ICL provides several benefits:
- ICL does not make any permanent change to the eye and can be removed if required.
- ICL can correct very high eye power up to -24D whereas LASIK laser can generally correct lower power.
- ICL can be performed in patients with thin corneas where LASIK may not be suitable.
